Teenage Smoking Didactic Unit

 *

Back to the unit's Home Page

Shalom!

The aim of this page is to offer teachers using the Teenagers Smoking  didactic unit some guidance as to what to do and how to go on about doing it.

The main purpose of the unit is to help  15 - 18 year-old teenagers (In Israel, 10th, 11th and / or 12th grade students in the Israeli school system) learn and actively use as much English as possible.

The unit, however, can be used in schools belonging to other school systems elsewhere since the theme is of universal importance and relevance. Although I am not familiar with the English as a Foreign Language Curriculum in countries such as Spain, to mention but one example, I am sure the unit can fit in there as well.

Note: the unit calls for collaboration. Pupils are encouraged to share and collaborate using Web 2.0 tools.

  • The first, opening page presents invites visitors to consider learning about teenage smoking. This page is meant to motivate pupils to learn about the issue and improve their English as well.

  • The Introduction page is meant to bring up pupils' previous knowledge concerning the subject of the unit.. Teachers and pupils may us it to discuss teenage smoking in the classroom and learn / review vocabulary.

  • The next page is Mind Maps. To be sure, one of the objectives of the unit is also to help pupils learn to use and create Mind maps. These maps are a useful tool in order to understand all sorts of texts. They help find the main concepts and present them, too. Pupils get ample practice with Mind Maps on this and other pages.

  •  The following pages (Fact Finding and Smoking and us) provide opportunities to use what has been worked on so far (vocabulary, Mind Maps, etc.).

  • The Expansion page allows those interested in expanding the theme to work on related webpages. These pages contain lessons as well as Webquests.

  • The Evaluation page introduces several options for evaluating pupils' progress. Evaluation, however, should be done both during and after pupils have carried out at least TWO evaluation tasks.

  • I strongly encourage teachers to give credit for students' use of Web 2.0 tools. Accordingly, teachers should encourage students to write on the unit's blog as well as share documents and files online. Remember: Sharing is growing!

  • A "Self-reflection" page close the unit.

I  recommend woking on the unit as I have presented it. Wherever convinient, however, teachers using this unit may feel free to make changes and move from page to page as they see fit. Incidentally, students may work on the unit on their own, since this work can be considered an addition to class work.

I welcome questions, comments and suggestions for changes and / or additional activities.
